INFO:
Heighway is a former side midfielder or winger, mostly on the left, sometimes deployed as centre forward. He spent almost his entire career at Liverpool, making 475 appearances from 1970 to 1981, scoring 76 goals. He retired in 1982 after short spells with American clubs Minnesota Kicks and Philadelphia Fever. He capped for Ireland in 34 occasions.
Considered one of the greatest players in Liverpool's history from an entertainment standpoint, Heighway was distinguished for his long runs down the flank. He avoided tackles, showed perfect ball control at high speed, delivered excellent passes and crosses even from difficult positions. He was a threat for the defences due to his unorthodox high-stepping style, outstanding bursts of acceleration, and constant switches of flank. Defenders therefore often had to resort to unfair methods in order to stop him. Heighway could get past them with ease before sending a fast cross or cutting inside. He wasn't a prolific scorer, but he created numerous scoring chances for teammates like John Toshack, Kevin Keegan, David Johnson, Kenny Dalglish, David Fairclough. The Irish winger was strong, brave, accurate with both feet, gifted with flair, creativity, the ability to improvise, and a calm temperament. Although he was criticised since his arrival at Liverpool for his apparent inability to score from favourable situations, he scored numerous great goals from angled positions or with tremendous first time shots on either foot. His scoring rate eventually wasn't bad, especially in the 1974-75 and 1976-77 seasons.
