INFO

Juan Felipe Martín Martín is retired Spanish footballer. Felipe was a winger, but Miguel Muñoz tried him as centre-back and stayed with him because he was very fast, he had an easy time playing the ball with both feet, he brought the ball out cleanly and played it well; and he was also very attentive to crosses, taking advantage of the speed he had as a winger. Indeed, Miguel Muñoz placed him on trial in defence, and surprisingly, a mediocre winger became an international sweeper. The secret is that it was Felipe himself who asked Muñoz to place him in that position, something he already did in training, which was always, always, behind closed doors. Felipe was not especially technically gifted, but he was a physical marvel for what was the norm at the time, despite chain-smoking. He could start the attacks with great long range passes from the back line, possessed very strong shot as well. His imprint and style, and his sober position as a central defender, led him to a golden era in which he was claimed by powerful teams such as Real Madrid , FC Barcelona and Valencia. But the conditions of his contract prevented his departure. Felipe Martín (La Orotava 1954) began his footballing career in the ranks of Infantil Iberia, then played for Villa, at just 15 years old, as a starter for UD Orotava, and continued his upward sporting career at CD Tenerife and, later with Unión Deportiva. In total, Felipe played 358 games (spread over thirteen seasons between 1973 and 1987, except for the one in 76-77 when he was loaned to CD San Andrés de Barcelona who competed in the Liga de la Segunda División Nacional), winger and later central defender, (243 in the top flight). Runner-up in the Copa del Rey in 1978 at the Bernabéu, he was one of the pillars of that squad that achieved promotion to the First Division in the 84/85 season with Roque Olsen as coach. During his long and successful professional career as a footballer, he was called up to the Spanish National Football Team , under the orders of the legendary Ladislao Kubala , being selected on three occasions in the years 1978 and 1979. His debut took place in Gijón on March 29, 1978 against Norway; his second performance took place in Bratislava against Czechoslovakia, almost a year later, on March 14, 1979; and his third match with the National Team was in Craiova against Romania on April 4 of that same year. During these years he demonstrated his virtues as a player and this took him to the highest levels of Spanish football, becoming the first and only Orotava footballer , to date, to defend the national team shirt. Another unique fact to add to this renowned player is that he was the first player from Orotava to have the honour of playing in a Copa del Rey final, an event that took place on 19 April 1978 at the Santiago Bernabéu when UD , the team he was playing for at the time, faced FC Barcelona captained by the Dutchman Johan Cruyff .
