Rowshan is a former winger and centre forward. He spent the majority of his career at Esteghlal, where he played from 1971 to 1978 ─ the team was still known as Taj ─ in 1982-83 and from 1984 to 1988. He played also for Emirati team Al-Ahli from 1978 to 1982 and in 1983-84. He capped for Iran 41 times, scoring 13 goals, winning the 1976 AFC Asian Cup and taking part to the 1978 FIFA World Cup, where he scored the only goal in the 4-1 loss against Peru. He played a major role during the World Cup qualifiers with his goals and assists.
A right winger in his early days, this position later became Rowshan's main one. Regarded as one of the best strikers in both Esteghlal and Iran national team history, he was considered an unrivaled and complete striker in his time, a phenomenon of Iranian football during the 1970s and 1980s in many experts' view. Rowshan was unique and decisive, highly creative, capable with the outside, distinguished for his technical and dribbling skills combined with his constant runs. Such playstyle made him a target for the opposing defenders who often used to stop him with rough tackles as he also had a short physique, causing him some injuries in particular a serious and long lasting one to the knee. Rowshan's specialty was the diagonal run towards the goal in order to receive the ball and after one quick control he'd deliver an accurate shot to the opposite corner. He was a master of shooting as he beat the goalkeepers without hesitation, not giving them the time to react. The goal he scored against Peru at the 1978 World Cup is an example of his shooting skills. He was also a fine header despite his short height.
