Castoldi was a centre back who played most of his career for Ascoli with 212 matches from 1970 to 1980 − rising from Serie C to Serie A with the club − after a short youth career at Atalanta and a loan at Solbiatese. He scored twice with the Bianconeri. He retired in 1984 after four seasons at Civitanovese.
Castoldi was a tough and strong man-marker who didn't leave his opponent a moment of breath. Reactive and very able header, he was effective at pushing the ball away, even when it was almost in goal. Not gifted with notable technique, he often delivered the ball in dangerous zones when he swept it away with the feet or when he made a back pass to the goalkeeper.
