Massa was a striker or midfielder who played as right winger. His career began at Serie D club Internapoli in 1965. The following season he transferred to Lazio, where he stayed six seasons between Serie A and Serie B, playing 154 matches and scoring 34 goals. Then he joined Inter but with less success: 64 games and only 9 goals between 1972 and 1974. He had a better time at Napoli from 1974 to 1978: 36 goals in 147 matches. He had his three last Serie A seasons at Avellino between 1978 and 1981, playing 73 games and scoring 11 times. He retired in 1984 after three seasons at Campania in Serie C1.
Massa was a small and agile player, gifted with dribbling and speed down the flank, very helpful during counter-attacks or to pass through the defences. Able with both feet, he had a decent sense of goal, scoring some spectacular goals like volleys, bicycle kicks and powerful long ranges but sometimes missing easy ones. Strangely, he proved at Napoli to be a very good header despite his height, able to hit the ball even between tall defenders. He could also be a good assist-man when he delivered accurate crosses in the box. He wasn't too consistent throughout the matches and it wasn't rare for him to be replaced in the second half. At Avellino he didn't lose his abilities but was less striker and more effective as assist-man than scorer, acting almost as inside while still being a winger. His condition and resistance weren't the same anymore and he often played only half match, sometimes coming in as substitute, but he still gave the team a great contribution.
