Defence MindedINFO:Di Somma was a sweeper or centre back. He played seven Serie C seasons at Lecce from 1968 to 1975, appearing in 222 league matches. However he had his best time at Avellino from 1977 to his retirement in 1984, gaining the historical Serie A promotion in his first season with the team, being captain for most Serie A seasons and playing a total of 210 games and scored 6 goals. He played also for Juve Stabia and Pescara.
One of the most representative players in the history of Avellino, Di Somma was a strong player gifted with decent run to push forward with the ball on his feet and the ability to set up the action from the back, mostly with long balls. He didn't have bad technique and occasionally he didn't dislike to get even in front of the goal. Thanks to his imposing size he was able in the air, he could cover well any defensive zone and his leadership was helpful for the rest of the defenders and the goalkeeper.
