Bertarelli is a former centre forward. His career began in 1965 and he spent a few years in minor leagues before playing in Serie B for Spal and Arezzo between 1968 and 1970. His career rose when he joined Ascoli: three seasons in Serie C and Serie B, 98 matches and 34 goals. Serie A club Cesena decided to buy him and he didn't outshine in the top league, scoring 21 goals in 77 matches. In 1976 he transferred to Fiorentina and here, unfortunately, his career had a downfall. He left after one unsuccessful season for Pescara, where he didn't get back up. He retired in 1982 after a few seasons in the Italian lowest leagues.
Bertarelli was a decent striker, gifted with a powerful shot, able with both feet and the head, from penalty and free kick. He had good speed, reaction, agility and could free himself from his marker, often leading him to commit a faul. He wasn't always consistent but when he was on fire, it was difficult to control him thanks to his characteristics. He may have scored more but sometimes he preferred passing the ball instead of shooting.
