Parkin was a full-back who spent most of his career at Wolverhampton Wanderers and with 609 matches from 1967 to 1982, he holds the club record for appearances. He scored 10 goals for the Wolves. He played also for Huddersfield Town and Stoke City.
Parkin was a fine and calm defender, very consistent and reliable, gifted with great timing, decent in the air, decisive but fair in tackles. Gifted with a very good turn of speed, he didn't always stay in the defence but he liked a lot to advance a bit to support the attack and set up the action for the forwards with fast and accurate low passes or crosses. Occasionally, he tried to shoot on goal. Peculiar was the fact that he always avoided if possible to use the left foot, sometimes even risking a pass using the outside of the right foot.
