He was a key player of the greatest Forest generation that won English League title, and two consecutive European Cups. He was side midfielder, who was mostly used as playmaker with amazing skills. He was excellent dribbler and his significant move was to get the ball, beat his opponent with excellent body feint and then sprint past him and deliver a worldclass cross. He wasn't much fast on long distances, but had good acceleration, and that helped him a lot while beating the opponent. He provided countless assists for his teammates, mostly from his flawless crosses, but also with low passes. He was the one who dictated the tempo of the game, and his teammates in the forward line were always ready to receive the cross. He was a penalty kick specialist. During his peak, he represented Scotland in only 28 games. Quote: Brian Clough: "John Robertson was a very unattractive young man. If one day, I felt a bit off colour, I would sit next to him. I was bloody Errol Flynn in comparison. But give him a ball and a yard of grass, and he was an artist, the Picasso of our game." Quote: Larry Lloyd : "he would drop his shoulder to the right, the full-back would go to the right, 30,000 people would go to the right. He’d put his fat arse to the right – and then, hey presto, he was off, down the left…He was slower even than me, but that little fat bastard was a magician.” |
