Davie Hay was an excellent player, considered one of the most complete midfielders to play for Celtic and Scotland. He could have been one of the very best Scottish players ever but unfortunately injuries and poor career choices destroyed the second half of his career. Davie started out at right back for Celtic and played in the 1970 European Cup final in that position, but his best role was as an attacking box to box midfielder where he excelled for club and country, including the 1974 World Cup. He was known for his tough but quiet demeanour, earning him the nickname "The Silent Assassin". His tackles were very hard but he wasn't a dirty player. He had very good long passing ability and solid technique, including good running ability with the ball which he often carried forward effectively. Above all he was an excellent team player and had an excellent understanding with all his teammates, supporting them defensively and offensively with tireless enthusiasm. This also helped his other main trait which was his versatility, Davie played in almost all positions for Celtic, only being unused at centre forward and on the wing. He played with all of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10 on his back for Celtic at some point. It could be said that his only weaknesses were average heading ability and that he wasn't much of a goalscorer, only scoring 9 league goals in his career. He also possessed good marking abilities which were deployed sometimes in difficult games. Overall Hay was a great player, but his career could have been even greater, going downhill after joining Chelsea in 1974 after impressing at the World Cup. He is still remembered as a Celtic legend despite only spending a few years in the first team there.
