Nené was a versatile player, capable on many positions: attacking midfielder or winger, inside or centre forward, central and occasionally defensive midfielder. His career began in 1960 at Santos, where he played 54 matches and scored 24 goals until 1963. That year he eventually capped 4 times and scored once for the Brazilian olympic team. He then transferred to Juventus. Despite having scored 12 goals in 36 matches in his first season, he didn't convince and was sold to Cagliari. He stayed with the Rossoblu from 1964 to 1976 ─ when he retired ─ playing 371 games, scoring 30 goals and winning the 1969-70 Scudetto. He played also for Chicaco Mustangs in 1967.
One of the greatest Cagliari legends and tactically one of the key players of the team, Nené had in speed, dribbling, technique and crosses his best qualities. His quickness and dribbling skills made him very effective in counterattacks and when he could move freely. In fact, he had more problems at overcome the opponents when the spaces were closed. Equally capable on the flanks as much as in central positions, he was a formidable playmaker and assist man who delivered numerous accurate crosses. His short passes were also good and many times he was protagonist of series of exchanges with his teammates. He was a clever hardworker, gifted with a strong physique and great durability, thanks to which he ran everywhere for a long time. He possessed a good and powerful shot, especially from the distance, but was less efficient when shooting from favorable positions. He had a good leap, was a decent header and a good piece taker, who took corners and scored a few goals from free kick and penalty. He was unselfish and gave his defenders a help when it was needed. He maybe lacked of consistency because he sometimes was disoriented and whenever that was the case, he was seen showing good things every now and then.
