INFO:Stevenson is a former left-half, occasionally deployed as left-back. His career began in 1956 at Dalkeith Thistle. He played for Rangers from 1958 to 1962. He then transferred to Liverpool, where he had his best time, making 241 appearances from 1962 to 1967, scoring 18 goals. In 1967 he joined Stoke City but the six-year experience wasn't remarkable. He retired in 1975 after playing in several clubs in South Africa, England, Ireland and Canada. Arguably one of the best Scottish midfielders during the 1960s, it's a shame that he never capped for his country.
A skillful, elegant midfielder, Stevenson was mostly renowned for his ability on the ball that consisted of classic touches and an eye for delivering spectacular and flawless passes, either long or short. He was physically strong, decent in the air, and capable of making hard but well timed defensive tackles to regain possession of the ball. Then he would start the attack with a well placed through pass or a weighted long ball to the opposite wing. Other than possessing excellent vision and tactical awareness, he was a good runner and dribbler who could go past several defenders with zig-zag movements. Also, he was a threat with his long range left-footed shots, and he was a good penalty taker. In fact, he scored most of his Liverpool goals from long range or penalty. In addition to his offensive contribution, he could remain in a deeper position when necessary rather than push forward. This way he could protect the half line and defend against the opposing midfielders. Although a midfielder, he was occasionally deployed as left back to cover for Gerry Byrne when he wasn't available. As he wasn't too comfortable in this position, he could be easily dribbled by skilled opponents. In such situation Ron Yeats was forced to leave his centre back position and cover the flank instead. When Stevenson played in his natural left-half position though, he used to drop back from the midfield to cover for Yeats when the Scottish centre back was supporting Byrne in the flank.
