Newton was a side-back on both sides, mostly on the right, but he could play also in the center and as defensive midfielder. He had his best time at Blackburn Rovers, playing 306 league games from 1959 to 1969. Then he had a less successful experience at Everton. After two seasons and a half he left for Burnley, where he played 209 games between 1972 and 1978, when he retired. He capped 27 times for England.
Newton was a tall full-back, effective either when he was defending or attacking. He was an expert tackler, good at covering, able in the air and could intercept intelligently. When he pushed forward, he showed great qualities, acting like an additional winger with fast and unstoppable overlapping runs, decent technique and good crosses to the box. He was calm, thoughtful and he always tried to make his way even in the most difficult situations instead of throwing the ball away and wasting it.
