INFO:Luciano Vassallo ─ born in Eritrea from Italian parents and brother of Italo ─ was an inside and earlier left or centre back. At the beginning of his career he was a left-back. He played most of his career at Cotton FC from 1960 to 1973. He capped 104 times for Ethiopia, many years as captain, scoring an incredible amount of 90 goals according to Vassallo himself − other sources report 99 goals. He was part of the squad that won the African Cup of Nations in 1962. Hated due to his Italian origins, he was hindered several times when he was stripped by the national team captain armband or when he was asked to change surname to an Ethiopian one. He was always supported by teammates and fans. So, he managed to win the 1962 African Cup as captain. Unfortunately, he was then stripped of all his properties and later his name was even deleted from every Ethiopian document. Only in the 1990s the problem was fixed.
Regarded as one of Ethopian greatest players, Vassallo was compared to legends like Alfredo Di Stéfano, Didí and Luisito Suárez. Initially a defender, he decided to turn into a midfielder after he was inspired during a match against an Egyptian team. He was a skillful player, renowned mostly for his volleys, free kicks and penalties. When he left his defensive role, becoming an astute playmaker in the middle of the field, he could either be an assist-man who played balls for his teammates masterfully or a scorer who delivered insidious and powerful shots. In the field he was in every zone, making shows when the ball was on his feet.
