Nayeem was a left back, capable of playing in midfield and attack. He played for Hyderabad City Police, East Bengal, Mohun Bagan during the 1960s, and mainly for Mohammedan in the early 1970s before retiring. An international from 1964 to 1971, he was part of the Indian squads that reached the 1964 AFC Asian Cup final and 1970 Asian Games third place.
A highly fit and versatile player, Nayeem was a stylish, skillful defender, who could easily match the abilities of any offensive player. Alongside Jarnail Singh and Arun Ghosh, he was part of the Indian defence that many consider as the best ever. He formed also a great couple of side backs with Sudir Kharmakar ─ another all-time great. He could push forward effectively to support the forward line with deadly overlapping runs. He wasn't a defensive stalwart like Jarnail Singh or Sailen Manna but neither of them was as much elegant and tactically intelligent as Nayeem, who could also distribute the ball quite well. On top of that, he possessed a natural leadership. His style of play and qualities quickly made him a fan favourite.
