His career began in 1945 at Nadi al-Olympia al-Maliki. He then played for Haris al-Maliki from 1947 to 1957 and for Farqa al-Thalatha from 1957 to 1966, when he retired. An international from 1951 to 1965, he's one of the longest serving captains in the history of Iraq national team and gained almost 80 caps. He was the captain during the 1959 Olympics, which was Iraq's first ever participation, and led the team to win their first ever FIFA Arab Cup in 1964. One of the pillars of Iraqi football and the most prominent player of the team's first ever internationally recognized official squad, Abbas was a fair defender gifted with great creativity and technique. In a match against Turkey during the 1964 World Military Championship, he managed to stop who was regarded as one of the best strikers and dribblers Turkey had at the time by removing the ball from the centre forward's feet. He then showed throughout the match his high technical skills that he used to keep the ball away from his opponents. He also scored several goals, mainly penalties, the most important of which probably is the one he took during Iraq's first ever international game lost 4-2 against Morocco at the 1957 Pan Arab Games. |
