INFO:
A tenacious and fast flank defender. One of the heroes of the golden season 1970 and finalist of the 1972 European Championship. “I was sure: if the attackers score, we won’t concede,” Istomin said. - No wonder the entire defense of CSKA was taken to the national team. We were tough defenders, but ask any football player back then if I hurt anyone. I'm sure the answer is "no". The same will be said about Kaplichny and Afonin, not to mention Shesternev. We always remembered that we had colleagues in front of us. And they have a family and children to feed.” He was not limited only to the performance in defence but also with benefit for the team he joined the attack. His sharp raids and dribbling on the flank were sometimes unstoppable and he would all of a sudden find himself in the opponent's penalty area.. in 1972 he was mostly defensive left back & right back, rarely going up and with an inaccurate long passing game..

Five times he was on the list of the 33 best football players in USSR, once - under the first number.
In 1967 he made his debut in official matches as part of the USSR national team. During his career in the national team, which lasted six years, he played 34 matches for the national team. He was a member of the 1968 European Championships in Italy and the 1972 European Championships in Belgium , where he won silver with the team. Also, participant in the 1972 Olympics, where the team won bronze medal.
