Djalma Dias was one of the most technical defenders Brazil has ever had, compared to Domingos da Guia and Mauro Ramos. He was a light and non-foul style defender who started the play from the back with ease. He was good in the air and in the anticipation.
Center-back in lower categories at America-RJ, he was promoted to the professionals in 1959 as a defensive midfielder because of his high quality abilities. He returned to his original position in 1960.
He was one of the greatest injustices not being called up for the 1966 World Cup, when the Brazilian delegation opted for veteran and established but already aged players.
