INFO:
Lawler is a former right-back. He spent the majority of his career at Liverpool, where he made 549 appearances from 1963 to 1975, scoring 61 goals. He then played for Portsmouth and Stockport County, in the USA for Miami Toros, in Wales for Bangor City, and in Norway for Raufoss and Grand Bodø, retiring in 1981. He capped for England 4 times in 1971, scoring once.
Lawler was a superb defender, distinguished for braveness and high consistency. He filled his task quietly, with a mix of an excellent defence and a modern attacking play. He was gifted with a great game reading skill as he would sneak into position instead of running. He never got flustered, and always tried to play good football. While he lacked pace, he could still catch an opponent who had a 10-yard advantage, and wingers didn't beat him too often. The right back showed great determination, and understanding with Tommy Smith. Lawler would draw the striker inside the area so that his teammate could make the tackle, usually having the better even of opponents like George Best or Bobby Charlton. Lawler himself had a fine tackling, and he also liked moving to the other flank when necessary in support of the other side back. He did everything quite slowly, and yet he was effective. On top of that, he had an impressive record goalscoring rate considering that he never scored from penalty nor free kick. He would slowly push towards the opposing area in order to get the ball and beat the goalkeeper, showing coolness and the brain of a striker. He had the skill of an inside forward as he liked dribbling and sidestepping his opponents whenever they tried to stop him during one of his progressions. Anyway, he usually went forward during corner kicks when his team was losing as he took advantage of his good ability in the air and remarkable shooting skill. Two of his most memorable goals came in 1970 against Everton and 1973 against Crvena Zvezda. The first was a vicious, curled half-volley that dipped over the goalkeeper. The second was a great volley that followed a stop with the chest and hit the roof of the net without the ball ever touching the ground.
