His career began in 1959 in non-league team Tintwistle Villa, where he scored the impressive amount of 96 league goals in one season. Liverpool signed him in 1960, but he played only 56 matches from 1961 to 1968, scoring 24 goals. Mainly a reserve, he played a good number of games only in 1963-64 as he appeared 24 times, scoring 19 goals. A bad injury to the left knee that occurred in the 1964 Charity Shield compromised his career. He retired in 1973 after experiences with Bury, Rochdale and Macclesfield Town. Arrowsmith was the typical centre forward who could drive the entire offensive line with his aggressiveness and will to score. He was strong, speedy and capable of scoring with any part of his body. He possessed a remarkable jump, good heading, an accurate and notably powerful right-footed shot. He had great positioning, anticipation and vision of the goal, going for it in the most direct way and scoring from almost any angle. Several times, he would receive a high pass and make a leap before hitting the ball with a volley after making a contortion that looked almost unnatural. Initially compared to Dixie Dean, some said that Arrowsmith had the tools to become the Liverpool's version of the Everton's legend if he only had a better ball control. |
