INFO:
Kapengwe was a right-winger, sometimes deployed as inside-left or attacking midfielder. His career started in 1957 at Kitwe Boma Tigers. He then played for Kitwe United from 1963 to 1966 following the merger between Kitwe Lions and Kitwe Boma Tigers. He had his best time in the USA as he played for Atlanta Chiefs from 1967 to 1969, scoring 16 goals in 48 matches. He became one of the first two Zambians to play in England as he and Freddie Mwila were signed by Second Division team Aston Villa for the 1969-70 season after a remarkable performance in a friendly match won 3-2 against Manchester City. The experience wasn't good though because after a first notable performance, he disappointed in the other two games he played. He retired in 1976 after playing for Kitwe United, City of Lusaka and Atlanta Apollos (formerly Atlanta Chiefs). He capped for Zambia 42 times, scoring 15 goals.
One of Zambian leading players in the 1960s, Kapengwe was an exciting attacking player distinguished by a cool and intelligent style of play. His cleverness on the ball at high speed always troubled the opponents. At the time, he was considered arguably one of the best players in the American league when it came to handling the ball. Although his main position was winger, he scored quite regularly thanks especially to a deadly shooting ability. He debuted with Zambia in 1963 against Congo, scoring with a thunderous long range shot not too far from midfield. He then scored twice several times against the likes of Kenya and Sudan. He also provided the decisive short pass as assist for Atlanta Chiefs' first goal in a 1968 friendly lost 6-2 against Pelé's Santos as the Brazilian team got surprised after only 19 seconds and applauded the feat by the American team.
