Mwila is a former inside-forward. His career started in 1964 at Rhokana United. He transferred to American team Atlanta Chiefs, where he spent three remarkable seasons, making 72 appearances and scoring 17 goals. On 27 May 1968, Atlanta Chiefs defeated Manchester City 3-2 in a friendly match, and Mwila scored the winning goal. His performance impressed English Second Division team Aston Villa that decided to sign him alongside his teammate Emment Kapengwe for the 1969-70 season. The experience was negative as Mwila played only one match. What followed were more spells with Rhokana United and Atlanta Chiefs from 1970 to 1973, and an experience as player-coach with Ndola United from 1973 to 1977. He capped for Zambia 36 times, scoring 15 goals.
Exclusively an inside-left during his youth, he then became primarily a midfielder. Considered one of Zambia best players at his time and arguably one of the best ever, Mwila was an exciting attacking player distinguished by his speed and cunning abilities with his natural left foot. One of Zambia's highest scoring midfielders, Mwila wasn't just a good scorer. He developed into a creative playmaker who could also deliver accurate passes. He provided around 10 assists in the American league.
