INFO

Leo Wilden was centre half and wing half. He was especially good in making the space with his great passes from deep midfield position with a great ability of reading the game and even better positioning. He was also strong tackler and had excellent condition, possesed solid technique and intelligence which allowed him to be some kind of defensive playmaker. Leo Wilden became a regular starter in Köln’s first team during his second season there (1959-60), playing as centre half. As a defensive centre half (stopper), he was primarily occupied with marking the centre forward, doing well with his excellent positioning and uncompromising marking but he was also useful in buildup. Soon, Leo Wilden was regarded as one of the best – if not the best – stopper in German football. After Herbert Erhardt had retired from international duties in 1962, Wilden’s time as the no. 1 central defender had come. One of Wilden’s best performances was neutralizing Nürnberg’s centre forward Heinz Strehl in the 1962 German championship final, which Köln won 4-0. In 1965 Wilden lost his starting place in Köln’s first team as the young talent Wolfgang Weber was drawn back into central defense. Wilden moved to Leverkusen in 1966 where he successfully resumed his stopper role. The first FC Cologne won from 1960 to 1963 four times in a row, the West championship. After Wilden had failed with the "Billy Goats" in the 1960 finals in the finals at Hamburg SV 2-3 with goals. In the final on May 12, 1962 in Berlin before 82 000 spectators was also Heinz Strehl FC Nuremberg in a 4-0 success chance against the defensive boss of Cologne. The title defense was successful in 1962/63 while the Oberliga West in the championship final of the German sat down but the west by Vice Borussia Dortmund with a 3-1 win over Cologne. From 1958 to 1963 Leo in the Oberliga West Cologne completed 119 games and scored a goal. In the finals of the German Championship, he played from 1959 to 1963 in 26 games. In 63-64 he completed 29 games and won in the debut year with the first FC Cologne championship. From 1963 to 1966, he came to 63 league games. From 1963 to 1966, he had played even 14 games in the European Cup for his club. From 1966 to 1969 Leo Wilden played three more rounds in the West Regional at Bayer 04 Leverkusen and ended after 95 Regional games with three goals his playing career. He later coached, among others the Pulheimer SC and SC West Cologne. Wilden made his debut in the national football team on 23 March 1960 in Stuttgart at the international match against Chile when he was substituted for Captain Herbert Erhardt. In the two crucial World Cup qualifiers against Northern Ireland - two wins with 4:3 and 2:1 gates for the German team - he had held the center half position. Under national coach Sepp Herberger, he was indeed the World Cup squad in 1962 in Chile, but came to no use. In all four German games Herberger trusted in the Fürth stopper Herbert Erhardt. Leo Wilden operated professionally in Cologne several Toto-Lotto-tobacco shops and is still very close related to the club.
