INFO:

Great example how money can destroy a promising career. Charlie was a real star in Germany in early 60's, great player, leading goalscorer and good playmaker at the same time, enterd in German NT but than he accepted well paid bid from AS Roma and actually spent his best years on the bench. He did later come back in Germany and played well, but that wasn't same old Charlie who could become one of the greatest German players. Charlie played mainly as a inside forward and later deeper in midfield, he showed good playmaking skills and even better scoring capacities, had great technique and solid pace, used to come very deep to collect the ball and start the attack. Jürgen ‘Charly’ Schütz was discovered by Max Merkel in 1959, aged 20, who signed him for Borussia Dortmund coming from Urania Lütgendortmund. Predominantly a center forward, Schütz immediately impressed as a goalgetter of extra class, as he topped the Oberliga West’s top scorers list already in his debut season. At Dortmund, Schütz formed a formidable duo with inside left Friedhelm ‘Timo’ Konietzka, who were soon dubbed “Max and Moritz” by the press due to their coolness and unpredictability on the pitch. As a technically very strong and likely to score striker he was already in his first season with 31 goals scorer in the league, also 1961 (27 goals) and 1963 (25 goals), he was the most accurate shooter of the Oberliga West. In 114 league matches he scored 100 goals, he also scored eleven goals in twelve games finals. After winning the German championship in 1963 by Dortmund joined the Italian Serie A, next to the Roma, who could commit for 450,000 DM, were the Torino and Brescia Calcio its stations south of the Alps. For the 1968/69 season came Schütz returned to Germany and first played for TSV 1860 Munich and Borussia Dortmund in 1969 for again, now as an attacking midfielder. After the descent of the BVB 1972 Schutz joined the West Regional to Rot-Weiss Lüdenscheid, where he also finished his career. After his playing career was working as a contactor including innkeeper. He died of throat cancer in 1995.
