INFO:

Jurgen Werner played as wing half and impressed with good passing range and for that time unusually strong long throws which often ended as an assist for goal. Werner was elegant player with good technique, he was regular set piece taker, very intelligent and passionate player. Jürgen Werner was an intelligent and elegant half back for Hamburg who was a controller with intriguing self-assuredness and a good distributor of the ball. A very tall player, Werner was known as a specialist freekick taker and was a member of Germany’s 1962 World Cup squad, but did not play in the starting team. Werner was known to be an ethic and intellectual authority for his teammates and one of the most intelligent and educated players ever to play for Germany. In 1963, the year when professional football was introduced in Germany with the implementation of the Bundesliga, Jürgen Werner had become one of Germany’s best half backs, but he decided to retire in the summer of that year at the age of 28 because he was not willing to be associated with football professionalism as he had strong objections against that. With him it was German champion 1959/60, 1963 DFB-Cup winner (last time used in the second round) and 1963 and several times the then league champions of the North. From 1961 to 1963 he played four times in the national team and scored two goals there. Werner was part of the German contingent of the soccer World Cup in Chile, but could not be used because of an injury. Since the Werner Lizenzspielertum, which was introduced with the creation of the Bundesliga for the players refused, he resigned upon completion of the 1962/63 season from active football. After a Latin and sports studies Werner went into the teaching profession, where he worked as a teacher and most recently in the clerkship in Hamburg. He continued to be a club member at HSV and held there during his last years, the position of deputy chairman. The DFB he was temporarily playing committee chairman and entered the public at the draws to the DFB Cup appearance. He died aged 66 from cancer. His grave is located in the cemetery Ohlsdorf. After his death, was the offspring of HSV-performance center named "Jürgen-Werner-Schule".
