Heinz Strehl was a German footballer who played as a forward. Strehl played as centre forward at his club until the arrival of Franz Brungs in 1965, when he moved on inside forward, he later played as an attacking midfielder. An iconic player for Nürnberg, Heinz Strehl started out as a really productive centre forward but later in his career he became a sort of withdrawn no. 9 who was more renowned for his creativity than his goalscoring. During his early years Strehl was regarded as one of the most technically capable centre forwards in Germany and soon he made use of his remarkable ball control and passing skills in a more and more withdrawn offensive midfield position. Nominally, Strehl was regarded as one of the two inside forward (central forwards) in the 4-2-4 tactic but de facto he was an offensive midfielder feeding the wingers and the central striker. Strehl was a fairly tall player who scored many goals in the early days with his heading via his physical assertiveness. In fact physically Strehl resembled a classic 'tank' centre forward. His international career started brightly in 1962 and 1963 but in the long run, there was no way Strehl could have ousted Uwe Seeler and as an offensive midfielder there were other players around (most notably Wolfgang Overath) who were regarded as better fits in that position. Thus Strehl stopped at only four caps (managing four goals) for Germany. He was a top scorer, robust and strong in the air. Strehl was a playful ball distributor who came from behind and scored his goals. Technically adept, unselfish, brilliant even when playing without the ball, he was always more than a so-called storm tank. Player with good dribbling and strong shot. A Bundesliga title-winner with 1. FC Nuremberg in 1968, Heinz Strehl was one of the proven goalscorers in West Germany in the 1960s and able to cap his West Germany debut against Yugoslavia on 30 September 1962, with a hat-trick in between the 23rd and the 62nd minute. An effort that still lists Strehl among the fastest fifteen hat-trick outputs in West German football history. Beforehand, Strehl had already been part of Sepp Herberger's squad at the 1962 FIFA World Cup, not making any appearance. Apart from winning the Bundesliga in 1968, Strehl also won the West German football championship in 1961 and the West German Cup in 1962. Strehl's 76 goals in the Bundesliga for 1. FC Nuremberg are still the most goals scored by an individual player of 1. FC Nuremberg in their Bundesliga history. After suffering a meniscus injury in 1970, Strehl retired from professional football. He continued to act as a player manager for FC Schwaig until 1973. Aged 48, Heinz Strehl died on 11 August 1986, of heart failure.
