Probably the only player in Bundesliga history who played at least once on all positions except of keeper. Aki was universal player, very intelligent and the brain of his team. Not too fast player but with good technique and passing, solid goal instinct and good condition, able to send dangerous long balls, had good strength as well. Aki Schmidt was a multi-faceted midfielder who performed exceptionally well either as inside right or as right half. His strengths were to be found in the offensive though, this is the role he is mostly remembered for and also his main task when playing for Germany. Known as an industrious all-rounder, Schmidt was a technically sound player whose goalscoring was a bit lacking. Schmidt was rated among Germany’s best midfielders during his best years between 1957 and 1964 and was ever-present in the national team during these years. With Borussia Dortmund has been in 1957 and 1963 German Champion, 1965 DFB Cup winner and won the 1966 European Cup Winners' Cup. Overall, he completed 195 games for BVB (57 goals) in the Oberliga West, and 81 missions (19 goals) in the Bundesliga. Ironically, a career high point was one of his greatest personal disappointment: In 1957, he was - as a regular player of the BVB and current national players - not used in the final of the German Cup against Hamburger SV, because coach Helmut Schneider, the exact same team wanted to run up to the had taken the title last year. In the national team he played 1957-1964 with a total of 25 times and the German national team was fourth at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden. In the 1970/71 season he was coach from Kickers Offenbach. With this club he won the 1970 DFB Cup as a coach. On 26 September 1970 he was dismissed in Offenbach. From 1997 to 2007, Aki Schmidt fan representative at Borussia Dortmund and organized to date include tours of the Dortmund's Signal Iduna Park, Schmidt remains loyal to the club as treasurer, to which he was elected to the General Assembly in November 2007. In addition, Schmidt had guest appearances on the television show RTL Crime Balko. Aki died in 2016.
