INFO:

Hoppi Kurrat was defensive midfielder and side back. Small warrior with big heart, Helmut Schon said if Hoppy was few inches taller, he would have been a regular starter for the German national team. Kurrat was tireless runner, he was everywhere on the pitch: Running, marking, covering, passing, shooting... Very fast player who knew to send very good long balls from the back, never gave up fighting till the last seconds. Kurrat used to score from long range, also was good in marking dangerous strikers like Hans Schafer for example. Kurrat played continuously from 1956 to 1974 with Borussia Dortmund and has been used both in midfield and in defense. He came from the Dortmund club FC Mercury in adolescence to Borussia Dortmund. Kurrat played a total of 612 times for Borussia, of which 247 Premier League matches and scored nine goals there. In the German national football team, he came to use in a youth selection. He was highly popular in Dortmund, both because of his great heart as well as fighters because of its small size: with approximately 1.60 m, it was one of the smallest players in the Bundesliga history. With all the great successes of the BVB 1960 to 1966 he was a regular player here. 1963 he scored in the final of the German Cup against 1 FC Cologne, 1-0. Descent as the Borussia in 1972, was "Hoppy" the last active for European champions Borussia. In 1974 he took over at short notice as the Borussia coach and replaced after the season as player-coach for the SV Holzwickede, with whom he won in 1976, the German amateur championship. Hoppy Kurrat today operates a restaurant in Holzwickede. He also is a member of the Elders of Borussia Dortmund. Kurrat younger brother Hans-Jürgen (born 7 July 1944) was also active as a soccer player for Borussia, completed 1963/64 but only one league game and one in the European Champions Cup. Hoppy passed away in 2017.
