Gerd Cyliax played mainly as the left winger in the beginning and later as right back. He was very fast player, Gerd run 100 meters in 10,90 seconds and almost made a German sprinting team for Olympic Games in 1956. That speed enabled Cyliax to be very useful on the pitch by making good runs on the wing and sending solid crosses and also to close the opponents in defensive duties. He was also in good condition, very mobile with good shot but knew to make some mistakes in quite simple short passes, used to take some long range free kicks. Cyliax played in the years 1959 to 1968 with Borussia Dortmund. He has been with Dortmund in 1963 and 1965 German Champion DFB Cup winner. In 1966 he belonged to the Borussia team that won the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup at Hampden Park in Glasgow for the first time a European Cup for a German soccer team. He was able to play out over the outer rail at high speed scoring chances. During the first Bundesliga 1963-64 season he moved to the right-back position. Cyliax arrived at Borussia from 1959 to 1963 to 105 missions with 22 goals in the Oberliga West, and 101 inserts in six goals in the Bundesliga. From 1963 to 1968, eleven assignments were added in the European Cup with two goals. Before his time he had already graduated from Dortmund for Westfalia Herne and West Prussia Munster in the league 66 games with 18 goals. On 27 March 1957 he entered the junior national team in the international match against Belgium in food for use as a left winger and contributed two hits for a 4-2 success in the DFB-team. He was most recently earned in addition to other older players, as only a few days later, late Heinrich Kwiatkowski, the Elders of Borussia Dortmund. Cyliax died on 17 May 2008 following a stroke at the age of 73.
