INFO:

Wolfgang Paul was legendary Borussia Dortmund captain. Excellent defender but unfortunately he picked up a severe injury at the peak of his career in 1968 and actually never played again on old great level before eventually retiring in 1971 at the age of just 31. Wolfgang was very strong player with good technique since he played as inside forward before he arrived in Dortmund. Very strong in aerial battles, good positioned and even better at anticipating the opponents moves, very calm in starting the attacks from the back line. A tall centre half who started out as an inside forward but quickly evolved into a hard, strong at heading central defender. Despite his beginnings as an offensive midfielder, Wolfgang Paul must be described as a very defensive centre half with mainly marking duties. His style of playing was often compared to Werner Liebrich. Paul was part of the 1966 World Cup roster but never won a cap. Paul had his greatest performance in the final phase of the European Cup Winners' Cup 1965/66. In the final, he saved the BVB 2-1 lead over time. As a pre-toppers and defensive organizer from 1961 to 1970 he played for Borussia Dortmund. He played 148 times (6 goals) in the Bundesliga with Borussia in 1965 and became DFB-Cup winner and 1966 European Cup Winners Cup winners. From 1965 to 1968 was the team captain Paul. In 1966 he participated with the national team at the soccer World Cup in England and was runner-up, but without ever playing an international match due to the presence of Willi Schulz, one of the greatest ever defenders to play football. Paul's football game was very hard, but he canceled at BVB never a red card. In 1968 Paul moved to a serious injury, from which never recovered properly. After his retirement as a player, he served as coach of the local football club in his home Bigge-Olsberg and the SC Willingen. He is Chairman of the Elders of Borussia Dortmund. Since 1971, Paul runs in Bigge / Hochsauerlandkreis a watch and jewelry store called Wolfgang Paul.
