Flemming Nielsen was a playmaker or defensive midfielder. His career began in 1951 at B 93, where he stayed until 1957. After three seasons at AB København, he transferred to Atalanta. He made 99 appearances from 1961 to 1964 for the Bergamaschi, scoring 8 goals. He retired in 1967 after a short experience at Greenock Morton and a comeback at B 93. He gained 26 caps for Denmark, scoring 4 goals.
Nielsen was a midfielder gifted with good speed, high stamina and tenacity. He possessed great technique and vision of the game but also was very athletic and powerful, imposed himself with his long legs and elegant style. Despite covering a mainly defensive position, he ran everywhere in the field, being especially effective as enforcer for the attacks. He could make personal actions, dribbling the opponents and delivering sudden low shots with good power, or he could be a valid supporter with his very accurate short passes. His pinpoint balls were also quite accurate and many times he triggered the attack from the back. He possessed a fine heading ability and was a good set piece taker, who occasionally scored from free kick. He assisted Angelo Domenghini in the 1962-63 Coppa Italia final with a cross from free kick even though Nielsen was acting as help for the defenders.
