He's one of the best defenders Wales ever produced and one of the best defenders in Tottenham's history too. England was a powerful centre back who was dominant in the air, his size and jumping ability made him very difficult to challenge with the head. He was an aggressive defender, sometimes too aggressive, and was often used to mark the strongest forward on the opposition's team. And so his matches usually became a 1-on-1 battle, which he would usually win. While he spent a lot of his time just heading the ball away, he was also a reliable defender on the ground although a bit slow. His passing was quite inconsistent, sometimes he could send some nice passes but sometimes he would just kick it out of play under no pressure. He often went forward at corners and free kicks and scored a good amount of goals in his career. With Spurs, England won the UEFA Cup, 2 League Cups and an FA Cup. He was Wales captain for most of the late 60s and early 70s although it wasn't really a successful period for the national team. |
