He spent most of his seasons at Juventus, playing 201 matches and scoring 14 from 1961 to 1969. He played also for Alessandria and Brescia, where he retired in 1970. He gained 6 caps for Italy. Bercellino was a strong, careful defender, tenacious one-on-one, gifted with determination and a powerful shot. He was, in fact, an able penalty taker and scored a few free kicks with thunderous ground shots. He possessed good technique, dribbling ability, was strong in the air, formidable at intercepting the ball, reactive and sprinting when it came to hit headers. Often deployed as wing-half, he showed a decent ability to set up the play, mainly with accurate long passes. Nicknamed "Rock", he was a tough man marker, capable to stop strikers like Nestor Combin or Roberto Boninsegna with impressive ease. The forward who gave him more troubles was probably José Altafini, who dribbled the defender in numerous occasions. Bercellino couldn't keep the pace of Altafini and whenever he managed to do so, it wasn't without difficulty. |
