Mario Martiradonna is former Cagliari idol. He was long serving right back, tenacious man marker like the Italian version of Berti Vogts, strong and combative with decent pace, very good in aerial battles, tireless and with good sense of anticipating. He wasn't too gifted technically but still knew to send a good cross from the flank. Growing up in Melfi, debuted in Serie C in 1959, with the Teramo. The next year he spent at Reggio, in B, and wore the shirt for two seasons. In 1962 he went to Cagliari, whose team is tied for the rest of his career, getting the first promotion to Serie A Sardinian (1963-64) and the title of 1969-70, was one of four players who celebrated both historic achievements. By not imposing physically, he knew a great marker. The Cagliari fans remember his performances against the likes of Bettega as opponents, but also against Rivera, Mazzola, Boninsegna, Prati, etc.. where the ball was only shown after the game. He left the football played in 1973, retiring to private life in his adopted city, Cagliari and devoting himself to training the youth teams such as the Monte Claro in regional students. Serie A has played a total of 239 matches and scored 4 goals. He died in November 2011 at the age of 73 years because of an incurable disease.
