INFOSepp Piontek is former German defender. Sepp was very strong and tough defender with good pace, knew to make some mistakes in passing but was very reliable and decisive. He sometimes acted more as a right winger - with unstoppable runs forward and precise crosses, which mostly Klaus Matischak exploited. A straightforward, no-nonsense and robust right back who was rated as one of the best in German football during the mid-1960s. Initially the Werder Bremen manager Georg Knöpfle wanted to make a ‘second Uwe Seeler’ out of Piontek thus he began his career as a centre forward but it soon panned out that Piontek was far more beneficial in a defensive role. As a full back, Piontek was a very reliable and consistent defensive player who did not join attacks all too often. In the mid-1960s he once saved the life of a young boy who was about to drown in an ice-covered lake after a crack in the ice appeared. In the 1980s Piontek became a household name in world football as manager of the Danish national team. Between 1963 and 1972 he played in 203 Bundesliga games for Werder Bremen, scoring 15 goals. In 1965 he became German football champions, and in his most successful season as a player, he was also a German national team. 1965 and 1966, he played six times for the German national soccer team. In 1968 he was again with Werder Bremen German Vice Champion. In 1972, he then finished his career. When he finished his playing career in 1972, he was immediately at Werder Bremen coach and remained until 1975. He then moved to Fortuna Dusseldorf, but was released at the end of his first season 1976. Then Piontek trained for two years the national team of Haiti, 1978/79 including the FC St. Pauli. 1979 Piontek for eleven years coach of Denmark. In 1990, he was after he had a year before failing to qualify for World Cup 1990, dismissed. Piontek is still the longest-serving coach of the Danes. That same year, he was trained coach of Turkey and this until 1993. In parallel, he coached in 1993 for a short time even the club Bursaspor. In 1995 he returned to Denmark and trained the first division club Aalborg BK, which he led in the Champions League. From 1997 to 1999 he coached Silkeborg IF, before he ended his coaching career temporarily. A year later, he was National Coach of Greenland. In 2002 he finally ended his coaching career.
