László Vasile Gergely is former Romanian midfielder of Hungarian origins. He was very useful midfielder, in old system he was wing half and in more modern tactics in Germany he was right midfielder. Very responsive in attacking and defensive duties, although he didn't score a lot of goals, he was sometimes in charge of set pieces as well. He was mainly known for his good passing range and lot of running, also decent technical skills. Besides he had solid pace and wasn't weak despite the small stature. László Gergely began his career in his home town of Baia Mare at CSM Baia Mare, in the second Romanian football league that played Divizia B. After winning the UEFA youth tournament in the summer of 1962, the national team the following season under the name Viitorul Bucharest in the Divizia A so that Gergely moved there. With Viitorul he completed on 19 August 1962 his first cap in the Divizia A. After the club had been disbanded, but during the winter break 1962/63, he moved to Dinamo Bucharest was there first but only rarely. Only in the season 1964/65 Gergely was frequently used and had his share of winning the championship. After the World Cup 1970 Gergely left Dinamo and came to Germany, where he joined Hertha BSC. There was Gergely involved in the Bundesliga scandal, and on 23 January 1972 banned for life, after which he ended his career. On 26 Gergely was pardoned in January 1973. Gergely played 36 games for the Romanian national football team. He gave his debut on 30 September 1962 against Morocco. At the end of his international career he was coached by Angelo Niculescu for the FIFA World Cup 1970 nominated in Mexico, where he was substituted in the game against Czechoslovakia. Some of his achievements: World Cup participants: 1970, Romanian champion: 1963, 1964, 1965, Romanian Cup winner: 1968, Youth European Champion: 1962. László Gergely lives in Berlin and runs the club restaurant of the 1st FC Wilmersdorf Public Park in Wilmersdorf in the Blissestraße. Occasionally, he is active in youth work of the 1st FC Wilmersdorf work. His older brother, Iuliu Gergely (b. 1939), was Romanian Under-17 national team until he suffered in a friendly match an ankle fracture, the improper treatment, the amputation of his right leg, and so had the early career-end. The youngest of three brothers, Iosif Gergely († 2004), also played football, but only made it through to the second division.
