INFO:
Meroni was a winger, equally good on both side and occasionally used as inside. His career began in 1960 at Como. He joined Genoa in 1962, scoring 8 goals in 46 matches. He transferred to Torino in 1964, making 122 appearances and scoring 25 times until the beginning of 1967-68 season, when he tragically died in a car accident. He gained 6 caps for Italy, scoring twice.
One of the most talented Italian wingers of the 1960s, Meroni was compared to George Best due to his creativity, technical qualities and physical similarity. Gifted with outstanding agility and speed as well as unpredictable and quick dribbling, he was a threat for all defences that were often embarassed by his continuous tricks. He was a magician with the ball, dazzling the opponents and amusing the crowds. Despite having a small physique, he liked challenging the defenders in physical duels even when he couldn't manage to dribble them, taking advantage of his great sprint and immense ball control, most of the times leading his opponent to put him down with a foul. He also possessed a solid shot with good power and a fine passing ability, providing accurate assists either with through passes or crosses often close to the ground, doing so without high speed of thought. Unfortunately, he lacked of consistency and loved playing on his own. He could lead his team to win all by himself but that when he was in good conditions and wasn't marked efficiently by the defenders. He was efficient when he wasn't too stubborn with the ball. Otherwise he constantly kept the ball, dribbled the opponents everywhere in the field, made useless mazing runs, looked for chances to score, usually reaching his purpose after missing a huge number of easy goals. When he acted as inside he showed his selfishness even more, proving not be a playmaker due to his individualism.
