INFO:Władysław Grotyński was a star of Legia Warsaw in the late 1960s and was about to fight with Jan Tomaszewski for the title of the main goalkeeper of the Polish national team before he ended in jail. Władysław was good keeper but also great athlete who practiced many sports. Very strong keeper with good reflexes and very courageous but his interventions with high balls did not inspire confidence. He was one of the most talented Polish goalkeepers. If he had trained in decathlon, he would probably have achieved success as well. He was the Polish junior discus throw champion, played handball, hockey, was as agile as gymnasts and as skipping as volleyball players. He had the reflexes of a fencer. He could throw the ball farther with his hand than many a league goalkeeper could kick with his foot. Only the desperate would decide to fight him in the air. He followed the old goalkeeping rule like few others, according to which it doesn't matter at all whether you hit the ball or the head. There was only one weakness of Władek: his character. He was not completely balanced, he never believed he was to blame for conceding a goal and did everything to stand out. The moment after conceding always looked the same. Grotyński ran out of the goal to explain to the defenders where they had made mistakes. He never got over it. Kazimierz Górski saw in him a greater talent than in Jan Tomaszewski. And yet he was never allowed to play in a major tournament, and he played only four matches in the national team. Coaches preferred goalkeepers who were not worse, but calmer. His career was ruined by a smuggling scandal, after which he went to prison for two years. He also liked drinking until dawn too much. The Legia goalkeeper liked to stand out on and off the pitch. He dressed like a banana boy, showed off his Ford Mustang, and often visited the famous Warsaw restaurant "Adria" and "Szwajcarska", where the Warsaw underworld met. Before he decided on a career as a football player, practiced hockey, handball, table tennis and successfully threw discus, winning, among others Polish championship for youngsters. The latter discipline gave him the ability to throw the ball far with his hand - all the way to the other half of the pitch. It is possible that the choice of football decided the family tradition, as his father before the war, he played in Tannery Krakow. Associated with the capital club was in 1964, when he joined Legia of going to his first club - Mazur Karczew. Sit in on a little bench to finally make his debut in the first team in the cup match with TSV 1860 Munich. He has such impressive record - 759 minutes without conceding a goal in league matches. During the seven years he played in nearly 150 Legion meetings. During this time, he could get two national titles and win the Polish Cup. The team played 4 games and none of these meetings did not end with the defeat of the national team. After his release from prison, he defended colors of Sosnowiec. Later, however, he could not find a place in any Polish club premiership. He died June 28, 2002, at the age of 56 years.
