One of the greatest Dutch central defenders and surely the most versatile. Rinus was sweeper, regarded as one of the best in the world, very strong and tough with excellent heading, decent pace, good technicallly. He had good jump and great long balls from the back line, very comfortable on the ball and intelligent with excellent positioning. Israel began his career with DWV, and DWS was champion in 1964. This team also played Joop Citizens, his brother, and also former international. Israel stepped over to Feyenoord where he as a player his greatest successes experienced by a country championship three times, once the KNVB Cup, the European Cup and UEFA Cup. In the final of the European Cup in 1970 against Celtic FC, he scored one of two goals Rotterdam. After leaving Feyenoord he played one season at Excelsior (1974-1975, and he was elected Dutch player of the year. During the last seven years of his active playing career he played for PEC Zwolle (1975-1976 to 1981-1982 ). After retiring as a player he was coach at PEC Zwolle (1982-1983 and 1983-1984, second half 1982 head coach, then assistant coach). From season 1984-1985, Israel was becoming head coach, first at FC Den Bosch (1984-1985 and 1985-1986). In May 1985, Israel, along with Leo van Veen and Johan Cruijff one of three candidates to the Ajax fired head coach Aad de Mos to follow, but eventually Cruyff was the new guy. Israel trained Feyenoord two seasons (1986-1987 and 1987-1988) until in 1988 he became head PAOK Saloniki. This foreign adventure lasted one season, and Israel returned to FC Den Bosch. After a season with Dinamo Bucharest (1991-1992) where he was the club championship led to the country, Israel was four years as assistant coach in service with the KNVB and he assisted the national coach Dick Advocaat and Guus Hiddink at the Dutch national team. After he was coach of the Ghanaian team and he worked for several years in the United Arab Emirates, and then to the Netherlands to return as coach of ADO Den Haag. In 2003 Israel went back to the United Arab Emirates to be there as a trainer to return to Al-Wahda FC. There he was active until June 2004. From March 2006 to the end of the season 2009/10, Israel was employed by Feyenoord as a scout. In the season 2010/11 he became coach of amateur club Young Boys from Haarlem. On 23 March 2012 the club went bankrupt.
