INFO

Georgi Naydenov is the best ever Bulgarian goalkeeper. He was respected for his incredible work ethic and his determination during training and matches alike. Keeper with outstanding reflexes and good positioning. Naydenov was an innovator in Bulgarian football, famous for his interventions far in front of the goal line, when he went out of the penalty area. He was also in good athletic shape which resulted in his solid speed and very long drop kicks. Naydenov was regarded as one of the 4 best keepers in the world in late 50's and even Lav Yashin said he learned from Naydenov. Naydenov started to play for Cherveno Zname in 1949-1950, than Spartak Sofia 1950-1955, CSKA Sofia 1955-1965 and again Spartak Sofia in 1966-1967. He was honoured as Bulgarian Footballer of the Year in 1961. Naydenov won the top Bulgarian league, 8 times (all with CSKA) in 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, as well as the Bulgarian Cup, 3 times (all with CSKA) in 1955, 1961, 1965. For the Bulgaria national football team Naydenov featured in 51 games and won a bronze medal at the 1956 Summer Olympics. He played for his country at the 1962 and 1966 World Cups. Sadly Georgi Naydenov died on 28/05/1970 in Damascus, Syria aged only 39 under mysterious circumstances. The initial reports claimed he had suffered a heart attack although members of his family and people close to him suspected he had been poisoned by a Bulgarian interior minister whom he had recently had an argument with regarding the joining of teams Levski Sofia and Spartak Sofia.
