Zignoli was a left back. Grown up at Milan, he started his professional career in 1966 at Taranto. He transferred to Bari after a season. He joined Cagliari in 1968 but became a regular starter the following year to replace Giuseppe Longoni. He played 35 matches during the 1969-70 season, winning the historical Scudetto. He came back to Milan in 1970 and stayed there until 1976 ─ not considering the 1974-75 season at Varese ─ playing 110 games. He retired in 1977 after a season at Seregno.
Zignoli was a side back gifted with great speed and stamina to make constant runs up and down the left flank. He could use both feet ─ not too well ─ but his main one was the right. In fact, he was adapted on the left side. Capable in the defence, he was used by Cagliari in the 1969-70 season to add the defensive covering that Giuseppe Longoni couldn't ensure. In fact, Zignoli could face even great strikers, leaving them no space and anticipating their moves. He wasn't though the cleanest in the tackles: he often committed rough fauls, risking to receive a red card in several occasions.
