Defence MindedINFO:Battara was a goalkeeper. He spent the majority of his career at Sampdoria, where he's considered one of the club's greatest goalkeepers. He played 247 for the
Blucerchiati from 1961 to 1972. He played also for Lanerossi Vicenza and Bologna, where he retired in 1974.
Battara was a very good and highly consistent goalkeeper. He holds the clean sheet record for Sampdoria with 641' minutes in the 1969-70 season. He had great reaction and was capable to make extraordinary saves as well as cat-like leaps, covering the goal very well and closing every space as much as possible. Moreover, he was simply unbeatable when luck was on his side. Despite the fact that he was arguably one of the five best Italian goalkeepers at his time, Italy's coaches always thought that he wasn't that consistent but rather just lucky. Apparently a bĂȘte noire against Napoli, he even made six incredible saves in a match in 1971 despite a thumb in a cast. Napoli's supporters unsuccessfully asked their president to buy Battara in many occasions.
