Pavinato was a left back and sweeper. He spent the majority of his career at Bologna from 1956 to 1966, making 276 appearances and being one of the best side backs in Italy during the 1960s. He played also for Lanerossi Vicenza and Mantova. He retired in 1970 after a couple seasons in lower leagues. He never capped for Italy but played 4 matches with the B selection. Gifted with a good physique, Pavinato was rough in the marking, able at controlling fearsome forwards and stood out for strength as well as reliability. Not always fair, he was prone to commit fouls with hard tackles especially against quick dribblers, who he struggles to stop otherwise. He was fast, capable of making good sprints on the flank and gifted with excellent timing reaction, often covering the goal and saving the ball on the line.
