INFO:

Slaven Zambata was born on 24th of September, 1940 in Sinj (than Kingdom of Yugoslavia). Tall, strong and brave, a real centre-forward. There was no hindrance for Zambata, a true class finisher and scorer of many important goals for Dinamo. Slaven Zambata was one of the legendary 'Blue No.9' (Dinamo's Centreforwards are Known as 'Plavi 9').

When Jerković left to play abroad there was only one person who could step in to take the coveted No. 9. Zambi! Slaven Zambata came from NK Junak Sinj as a 19 year old in 1959 and played in blue until 1969 in 393 games scoring 265 goals, of which 93 were League goals. Slaven Zambata begins his career at NK Junak Sinj in 1958. He spend only one season in NK Junak before transferring to Dinamo Zagreb.Slazen Zambata has won 4 former Yugoslavia Cups in 1960, 1963, 1965, and 1969. He was also Yugoslavian Cup runners up twice, in 1964 and 1966. Although Zambata played in great (legendary) Dinamo generation in Dinamo history, he never won Yugoslavian first league. 4 times he finished as runners up with Dinamo in Yugoslavian first league (1960, 1963, 1966, and in 1969 which was his last season in Dinamo). With Dinamo, Zambata also finished 3 times third in first league (1962, 1964, and 1968). He was a captain of the 1967. Fairs/Uefa Cup winning side and a member of generation '63 which reached a final of Fairs/Uefa Cup for that year. In Fairs/Uefa Cup 1963, Slaven Zambata was one of Topscorers. That was a great year for Dinamo because they reached Fairs/UEFA Cup final and lost to Valencia (1-2 and 0-2). In first round Dinamo played vs. famous Portuguese side FC Porto. In 1st leg we won 2-1 in Portugal and 2nd leg finished 0-0. Than, in second round we draw R. Union Saint-Gilloise where we won in playoff 3-2 after we won in 1st leg (2-1) and defeated in 2nd (0-1). In Quarter finals Dinamo played vs. German side Bayern Munich (4-1. 0-0). In Semi finals we draw Hungarian side Ferencvarosi TC (1-0, 2-1). But the biggest achievement of Dinamo team was being winners of Fairs/UEFA Cup in 1967. They became national heroes and went to a legend. Fairs/UEFA Cup in 1967 Dinamo played/won vs. Spartak Brno (2-2 Agg. won after Extra time), Dunfermline Athletic FC (4-4agg), Dynamo Pitesti (1-0agg), Juventus Turin (5-2agg) in quarter finals, Eintracht Frankfurt (4-3agg) in Semi finals and in final vs. Leeds United 2-0 at home, and 0-0 away.

In Former Yugoslavian Cup Zambata scored 41 goals in process, (8 of them in final games - 6 vs Hajduk and 2 vs Budućnost) and is tied with Stjepan Bobek as the best Cup scorer of Former Yugoslavia. Zambi (nickname) holds a somewhat record of being the only player of Former Yugoslavia's big four to have scored a hat trick vs. their main rivals (vs Hajduk 26.05. 1963.- 4:1, vs Partizan 20.05.1964.- 7:2 and vs C. Zvezda 02.04. 1966.- 6:0).

After 10 years in blue colors of Dinamo, Slaven Zambata went on to play in Belgium for KSV Waregem (1969-71) playing 33 games scoring 16 goals and Crossing Schaerbeek (1971-72) playing 23 games scoring only 3 goals. Then after a short stint in Austria with FC Villach (1973) Zambata returned to Dinamo to end his football career that year.

For Former Yugoslavia team Zambata played from 1962 to 1968 in 31 games scoring 21 goals. He scored 3 goals in his first two games (one vs. Germany DR- 2:2 in his debiut, 16.09.1962. and two vs. Ethiopia- 5:2, 19.09.1962.). Also Zambi scored 4 goals vs. Japan in Osaka (1:6, 20.10.1964.) and a hat trick vs. Finland in Belgrade (9:1, 25.09.1968.). Zambata also played 2 games for young Yugoslavian national team scoring 2 goals. His last match in Yugoslavian jersey was against Spain (0-0) in Belgrade. As national team captain he played in 1964 Olympics in Japan.

It is sad that a Lawyer, author of many Football Year Books with coaching and hospitality diplomas, with experience in being players Agent has no involvement in day to day running of our Dinamo.
