He's mostly related to AS Saint Étienne as he was playing there during the peak of his career. He was fantastic in game reading and anticipating opponents attacking moves and that was his greatest asset. He was also known for his hard shot and his tendency to take free kicks or to wait for the return ball to try some long range effort. He was good at physical challenges and decent in the air. However, his casual style of playing (sometimes looked overconfident) lead him to dribble the opponent in his penalty box or try some unreasonable passes from the defending line, which often lead to dangerous situation for his team. But all this couldn't deny his ability to command the back line so he was appointed as captain of both club and national team. And for the most of the time, he delivered precise lofted passes for his teammates.
