Gordon Banks was one of the greatest goalkeepers if not a greatest of his or any other generation and he will forever be remembered for his heroic part in England’s triumphant 1966 World Cup campaign that culminated in the famous 4-2 victory over West Germany at Wembley in the final.

Four years later, he was still England’s number one as they headed to Mexico to defend their World Cup crown and produced the competition’s most iconic moment when he spectacularly kept out Pele’s header in the clash with Brazil in Guadalajara, a breathtaking effort which became known as the ‘Save of the Century’.

Capped 73 times by his country, he finally hung up his gloves in 1972 at the age of 34 and is universally acknowledged as the first of what was to become a golden era of English goalkeepers.

He had great reflexes and he was almost invincible. He was not only gorgeous - he was a constant whose errors were really very, very rare. Holds the record with seven consecutive games in the national team received no goals. Banks since 1964. to 1967. the national team played 23 games without defeat and still the only English goalkeeper who has a world title. England lost only nine of their 73 matches with Banks in goal. What's more he let in just 57 goals, a miserly average of just 0.78 goals per game, keeping 35 clean sheets. With Banks at the back the team had a confidence which flowed through from centre back to centre forward. It takes a special sort of player to instill that sort of confidence, and Banks was that sort of man. He was the model on which great English goal keepers from Clemence to Shilton have modelled themselves on ever since.

In 2002. Banks was included in the English Football Hall of Fame and for many is seen as the greatest goalkeeper ever. If you ever need proof of just how good Banks was, then take a look save againts Pele again
The ball, miraculously, rose and cleared the bar for a corner. No one, least of all Pele, could take it in. The Brazilian ace shouted “Goal!” as the ball left his head, so certain was he of scoring. Later, he was to tell everyone that it was the greatest save he had ever seen.
