Dougan was a centre forward who played mostly for Wolverhampton Wanderers: 323 matches and 123 goals from 1967 to 1975. He played for several other clubs including Portsmouth, Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa and Leicester City. He capped 43 times for Northern Ireland, scoring 8 goals. He retired in 1977.
Dougan was a tall striker who had in strength and header ability his best characteristics and due to his size and good leaps he was very difficult to mark. He was left footed but could use the right foot as well, had enough speed and skills for a man his size, didn't have a very powerful shot and sometimes used to move to the outside of the box to pass the ball, mostly with headers.
