After Alexander Horváth left for abroad, he was replaced by Vladimír Hrivnák at the club and also in the national team. The skillful defender, who was previously a gymnast, made his debut in the most valuable jersey on September 14, 1969 in Prague at Letná against Hungary in the 1970 World Cup qualifiers. At that time, Hrivnák replaced František Plass at half-time with the score at 1:2 and ultimately participated in gaining an important point in a 3:3 draw. He also started in the duel against Ireland (3:0) and helped coach Jozef Marek's team to advance to the World Cup in Mexico. At the final tournament of the 1970 World Cup in Guadalajara, he played the entire match in the group stage against England (0:1), starting in the defensive four together with Migas, Dobiáš and Hagar.
