Attack/Defence Awareness Card: Defence MindedINFO:Jean Wendling was a former French right back most famous for playing for Reims and winning 2 league titles with them. He joined the club just after their greatest successes of reaching two European Cup finals but they were still a force domestically. Wendling was a very reliable defender whose best attributes were his positioning, his pace and his technique and vision of the game. He was a very complete defender for his time, his only real weaknesses were his slight body frame and his somewhat average aerial ability. Although he didn't go forward very often and only scored 1 goal in his entire career, he contributed offensively by using his touch and intelligence to get the ball out of tight spaces at the back so the play could progress forward. He also had good long passing ability which he often utilised, just gently raising the ball over players and right onto the toes of his teammates. Defensively his pace was very useful when tracking opposition wingers, he could often keep up with them and was very hard to dribble past. His timing on interceptions and tackles was excellent, and he very rarely went to ground, preferring to nick the ball cleanly while not totally committing himself to the challenge. His career went into decline at the age of 30 because of an operation on an injury he suffered combined with Reims going into freefall, suffering relegation in 1964, only two years after winning their last league title and despite finishing as runners up the year before. He retired at 31 years old, considered a legend of Reims and Strasbourg, and winning 26 caps for France during his career.
