He was versatile and could play also as central midfielder. His career began at Chelsea in 1963 but he was sold two years later to Sheffield Wednesday, where he was a regular for four seasons: 150 league games in 19 goals and a second place in the 1966 FA Cup. He transferred to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1969 and things got even better for him. He played 163 league games and scored 34 goals, reaching the 1971-72 UEFA Cup final. Then he had a few more good seasons at Manchester United and Southampton before playing for minor clubs and retiring in 1979. He capped 7 times for Scotland, scoring twice. McCalliog was a fast midfielder, gifted with good technique and great passing ability. A neat ball player, he often used first-time touches, not only when he passed the ball but also when he decided to shoot with a volley. In fact he pushed forward a lot, looking for space to try scoring. Due to his versatily, he could help during the defensive phase as well, starting a new action when he got the ball. |
